Has anyone here successfully used the recombinator?

I must have attempted at least 20+ recombinations at this point, and not once seen a success. Does this thing actually work, or is it just a troll?

It does work, i got some decent recombs, just dont expect it to work 10 times out of 20 attempts.
You still have to be extremely lucky and there's no point in judging after 20+ tries, maybe you can start asking yourself if it works after 100+ tries, it's a gamble machine (another one) came out this league so they will probably do something about it, or maybe not.

Depends what you're trying to do with it.
If you're attempting to 'print' items (combining 4+ top mods together), then your success chance is going to be abysmal.

You can however game the system. Say you have 3 good suffixes and 3 absolutely useless prefixes. You can recomb the item with good suffixes with something that has a low tier mana/other crap mod to get a 50/50 chance to free up 2 prefixes.
Or slam 2 good mods together, exalt twice and fracture for a higher chance to hit a useful mod.

I do agree however that the way certain recombs are currently weighted is somewhat overcooked. It's actually possible to get a 0% chance when trying to combine as few as 3 mods.
I've had a lot of things listed with a high percentage success chance poof. I've also had success on something that had a 1% chance... yet none of them were ever quite as amazing as things I've seen in videos.
Not even once and I farmed a lot of gloves for that purpose in 0.2.
recomb is great for boots. you get t2 MS and t2 life and you get 30% chance. some mods should be totally avoided on recomb as they cap at like 3% or something nutty (spirit/+skills etc), might as well use chaos orbs on those

It's not that type of game. You need thousands upon thousands of hours of play to see any results.
After you've used it 1k-5k times and had something good as a result maybe 100 times, then you could say it works as intended.

Meh. It sort of works :)

But i try to keep it's use limited, because seeing some of those bases pop makes me wanna cry :p
I adopted these ground rules for myself and they've helped me make use of the damn thing while hanging on to my sanity :

Using it for :

1 - Moving some stats over from a bad base to a wanted one. Important to keep in mind here is that your odds for success seem to depend greatly on a few things.
Try to use the same items of the same ilvl, or at least make sure that the modifier tiers you're trying to move to the target item can actually roll on the target base's ilvl. If the darn thing decides item B becomes the blended one but you were combining (moving) mods that require a higher ilvl than B has, it'll just eat everything without a warning. This is something that also applies to 2-5 btw. Secondly, whenever possible, choose a low quality modifier on the item you're trying move to, one or more modifiers tiers with, at least, a lower ilvl requirement than the modifiers you're moving onto it. Of course, sticking with 1 modifier on the target here is highly recommended and since it's just a matter of moving others, the crappier, the better for the odds of success

2 - Combining 2 tier 1 mods to then continue in the idle hope of crafting it further into something actually useful. No explanation needed, says it all.

3 - Combining a tier 1 mod + tier 2 mod already together on the first base with a tier 2 modifier on another item. Also fairly self-explanatory, just avoid using different item bases at all to eliminate the otherwise highly likely (and favoured) outcome of them ending up on the wrong base in case of success. Also, place the item with the two modifiers on it in the left panel, the other one in the right. Without going into specifics, sometimes it can improve the odds.

4 - Same as 3, but for an item with two Tier 1 modifiers, to combine it with again, a T2. Same rest too

5 - To prevent myself from stumbling out into the streets, frustrated and raving wildly, i also placed a limit on what i would still call acceptable odds to roll the dice on. If things dip below 4-5%, i just don't bother anymore. To me, it starts to feel as if one's better off just hoarding and uptrading the different related currencies. This self-imposed limit is also the reason behind the very specific choices seen in the previously listed points.

Anyway, use it or not. I just thought i'd leave these few pointers that helped me deal with this otherwise frustrating mechanic and to say that, while using it like that, i did indeed end up making a FEW valuable items out of the hundreds i tried to make. Note that the operative word here is 'few' :p

Note : There are detailed tables on the world wide web with all the required information i spoke of. You won't find those anywhere in-game, so Google for 'poe2db' or 'GrannypOrn' :p
