The "+# to level of all X skills" meta needs to go

I feel that this isn't talked about enough, but gem level modifiers being by far the best scaling vector for pretty much any build regardless of archetype is such terrible and lazy design.
Getting so much character power from a single modifier makes it pretty much mandatory on every piece of gear on which it can roll, which means it also makes itemization and crafting dull and boring. In a game where the devs said multiple times they want ground loot to matter, any weapon that drops without rolling gem levels is next to useless, same for amulets, same for melee gloves/caster Foci, which just feels so bizarre to me. Enter, "Prism of Belief". I think this might just be the worst designed unique in all of PoE 1 & 2. For a jewel socket, up to +3 to your main skill is such a no-brainer on any build that you'd simply never not use one. It's too obvious, way too obvious it goes completely counter to the type of decision-making process that makes character building in these games so interesting and fun. I have to say, I and many others have been talking about it for quite a while, it even got asked in an interview. but I agree with you that this needs to be even more in their face.

i dont think this is that easy to fix.. sure you can remove it but then you would need to tone down the bosses
i do think damage incoming and outgoing is too high sure, but you cant fix outgoing without also fixing incoming |

100% agreed! I'm playing self found for the first time this season and while I enjoy the overall experience quite a bit, having to find a base with "+# to all skills" for every craft on certain items is frustrating. It is already an issue in trade league. But in self found it is doubly annoying, since you can't just by a base or a fully crafted item from the trading post.

I've just made an experiment here https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3896920 where I'm wearing low level gear and still managing in content that should be deadly to me. In the video I posted there with those conditions... that's the first time a fight lasted more akin a proper boss fight time... yet it was still quite easy even so. +1 for removing +skill levels from all gear.
It will help with balancing the game A LOT. |
