Weirdly high ping to Aus servers from NZ

Hey,
I'm trying to play on the Aus servers because they seem more stable then the NZ ones, but I'm getting huge ping(180 in game). From server select it's listed as sub 40 so I'm not sure where the problem is occuring. I've got friends who play on Aus from nz and they get 40-50 ping. Any idea how to resolve this? I get 4ms ping on nz servers but get a lot of DC's. Singapore is fine too, 120ms in login screen 120ms in game.
