Any thoughts on Darkness Enthroned by the way? Can 2 good abyssal jewels beat a medium to high end belt effects? Or is %mana recovery rate just too good.

Get an Essence worm and put Wrath in there and get annoint your amulet. Those 2 things are really cheap and really good to do.
Get a watcher's eye with mana recovery rate (imo the best mod for us if you want a cheap one, you could also get the damage to mana before life). If you want to splurge, it'll probably be around 50ex for both mods, so don't bother with that yet :P.
I think the large cluster jewel is only worth it if you get at least 2 notables from it, so scintilating idea and disorienting display for example.
For wands look for good mana and % increased spell damage. Those 2 mods should carry you for a while. If you feel like you want to try crafting, get some lvl 84 shaper wands (or maybe crusader) and use some deafening essence of woe on them till you get a good mana roll.
Darkness enthroned is probably pretty good until you can go really highend with the mana recovery rate.
If you run the agnostic, you probably don't need a life flask anymore, consider using atziri's promise.

That should give you something to do. :P Make sure you keep your resses fixed when you go for Essence worm and Darkness enthroned.

A few follow-up questions that occurred to me:
- Would Malachai's artifice + golem skill gem function well as a ring, perhaps instead of Essence Worm? In theory it's a +50% damage modifier (as well as some extra resistances, and an extra skill gem slot elsewhere). Not sure how consistent it is, but I could see it working against bosses.
- Is there any reason why the passive tree uses the two big agility/strength nodes instead of investing two points in "Practical Application" which provides 5 more str/ag as well as protection against stuns while casting? Of course only applicable when you need the nodes in the first place to qualify for gems. It seems a straight up upgrade.

It's a great guide! Filled with lots of detailed explanations.
The sight on my available devices is focused on the Witch-start.
There is no option to follow ur skills, they just run out of the window :S
If there is any possibility to link a Screenshot or sth like a picture it would be great. In this way the picture can be selected and zoomed in.

Hello, new player here. Been using this build and so far it has carried me trough the game no problem. I do have a question tho - is there an alternative to the Elemental Focus support gem in case I would like to shock for any reason?
