This is horribly cynical, and devalues the efforts of those who participate in these contests. Take a look at the winner works of the previous contests.

I am very curious, does this looks like the worst entry from the lab fan art contest to you? Following your train of tought this poor bloke had the worst entry, and had just zero MTX points, so GGG gave him the first place out of sheer charity.

I think most people got them from previous supporter packs. The $900 Conqueror Pack from the game's release, $1,500 Eternal Pack & $12,500 (no, that's not a typo) Ruler of Wraeclast Pack from the Open Beta, and the $1,000 Diamond Pack from the Closed Beta included custom forum avatars. You can contact Support to arrange a custom purchase, but last I heard it'd set you back $500. It's possible the price has changed since then, so poke GGG if you're interested.

It's something I've been considering for a while, but $500 isn't throwaway money for me and the lack of anything else included with the purchase makes it a tough sell imo.
