My one question for this build, is it worth using a fire penetration jewel in the volatile dead wand? I am currently using an empower because I like the bigger sheet dps but I am not sure if it is a good idea or not.

The only time when fire pen is really worth it is against red elder, uber elder, and shaper. They have significant resists, so penetration is important. I see that you're already running Xoph's. If you also run a penetration watcher's eye it is possible that Fire Pen loses out to other gems. The difference is pretty small though, so feel free to run whatever you want.

I decided to drop righteous fire to get more survivability. I also picked up a second curse in the CWDT setup so that bosses are even less spooky.

I just had one leveled lying around. I don't think it hurts to have it leveled since it has similar dexterity requirements to your other gems (i.e., faster attacks, GMP).

This time around I knew the mechanics, had a +1 helm enchant, and changed the gem setup to Volatile Dead - Fire Penetration - Concentrated Effect. I tried a different ring in hopes of not getting frozen/slowed but it didn't work out. I may resort to Kaom's Roots boots in the future.

I think that belt would work out if you can balance resists and stats on other pieces of gear. That belt you get lots of speed but miss out on life, stats, resists, or an abyss jewel.
