My feedback on Dawn of the Hunt

Me and my partner started new characters in the new league about 10 days ago, her idea i feel a little arpg burnt out tbh.

context of the feedback: im aware of the bad backlash people had on day 1, i missed all that so ive only started playing since all these recent big patches post ziz interview. were now just shy of lvl80ish, weve got a few T6 and 7 maps in the stash, weve been playing self found for gear/sockets/gems but were testing using the currency exchange to occasionally swap exalts for regals etc. were both playing hunters, lightning spears, not really following any guides just casually working it out as we go.

were both having a lot of fun. i dunno what day 1 was like, but my experience coming in post patch was the game felt a LOT better than it did back on the original launch.

the tl:dr, followed by me waffling in detail...

overall, big thumbs up. loved the campaign, loved the endgame, it feels a lot better, new class feels good. my mrs likes the game even more than i do, shes a total convert to the genre from mmos, soulslikes and mobas.

stuff that could be better:

* omens/essences feel pointless to me so far.

* campaign has some really tedious none gameplay clicking on npc bloatage.

* gem system feels clunky/bloated. surely this can be streamlined where we dont have all these gems of different levels being looted etc? it feels unnecessarily messy.

* menus/ui still feel really bad with a controller. we really just need to be able to use a mouse in our inventory/stash/skill tree/blah blah while in controller mode.

* rune socket system still doesnt feel as advertised, i never felt like this is my crafting bench and i can fix things during the campaign. it only became that in endgame when i felt my gear and artificer supply was good enough to make use of it properly.

now the expanded waffle...

the campaign feels tighter. i still worry that it feels too much like a campaign to repeat it dozens of times without absolutely despising it within a couple of years.

mini campaign woes rant:

theres a bit where you go to the caravan, talk to someone, interact with the map, drive it somewhere, get off the thing, walk, talk to someone, she sends you back to the caravan, you talk to someone again, you interact with the map again, drive it somewhere else... like rly? rly tho? as seasoned fantasy authors who are trying to tell this really important narrative through the format of an arpg was that bit just essential to the plot you built poe to tell? or is this an arpg made because you guys wanted a looter where u killed monsters and you just got someone to make up a story because you felt you needed one fill that gap? cause i feel like thats what this is and i dunno at what point the tail starts waging the dog and dictating bad time wasting gameplay?

those moments feel like D4 and its fetch quest nightmare of a campaign. i like the poe2 campaign, i hated the d4 campaign so overall its good. but it has some of those moments and every time i have to replay them they annoy me even more.

loot progression felt mostly great, i think i was still a little too starved of artificers orbs during the campaign. yes i had a few in my stash most of the time but it was 1, 2, 3 of them so i was too scared to use them on my gear.

my gear always felt trash, which is fine btw. it was enough & i like the starvation vibe. but a result of that is i have 2 artificers orbs, i really need some dex to level my gems, i have the dex runes but i still dont have the confidence to fix my problem despite having all the tools because ive only got 2 orbs and my gear is absolutely trash.

i dont feel like i can risk it because what if an upgrade drops? it would theoretically be so easy to upgrade any of my gear. If i had 6 of the orbs i would think ok, use a couple, fk it ill easily find more and i have them to spare.

so i didnt feel like i had a poe1 bench, i didnt feel i could slap a mod on my gear and fix problems i had. but i did sail through the campaign for the most so...? fine i guess?

endgame feels a lot better. lightning spear probably a bit too strong on trash? its just about ok self found like we are, still could do with a nudge. map sustain at lower levels feels excessively generous. the mechanics of the atlas are so good, were having the best time.

omens and essences have still had literally 0 impact on our game at all by lvl80.

little rant on omens and essences:

a criticism i would have is that the crafting systems you have in place are allowing people like Belton to make stupidly op perfect items that should never be able to exist while at the same time those systems like omens and essences are doing absolutely nothing at all for self found players like us.

these mechanics should be helping people like us who are not trading for gear make decent usable items that help us bypass the rng of looting where we need it while not allowing mirror crafters to achieve literally perfect items. and thats a complete failure in my mind, the worst of both worlds is happening. Belton should be able to make a 90% perfect item and i should be able to make something actually usable with them.

i have made usable gear, but none of it has involved essences or omens theyve been completely useless.

I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
