Cogwheels of doom - constant DX12 crashes (client-caused) - UNFIXED in 0.3.1
|
Just to add my voice to this: I am also experiencing the same issue. I have tried most every combination of settings, to no avail.

Also adding to this, what is strange is that it actually started happening for me with 0.3.1. Didn't have it at the start of the league, I'll go try Vulcan, since dying 3 times during "pause" just feels like I don't want to play any more.

" I've had this since 0.2 and then they implemented the same changes into 3.26 in POE1. Looks like some sort of conflict between DX12 and NVIDIA drivers, but GGG have yet to say a single word on this issue. Sitting in HO spamming alts for 4 hours straight is peak PoE gameplay. Thanks, Chris.

GGG discusses the NVIDIA driver crash here: youtube.com/watch?t=6487&v=LtHF35GOZhw&feature=youtu.be tl;dr: GGG researched for months, concluded its NVidia driver issue in more-recent drivers, cannot get fix from NVidia. Specifically states a driver "around 560 doesn't have the issue" Download DDU: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu Download 560.81 drivers (this fixed it for me): https://www.guru3d.com/download/geforce-56081-whql-driver-download/ Find and "clear" your PoE2 shader cache folder in Windows. - "Clear" means delete all the subfolders and files in your shader cache directory but not the directory itself. - Where this folder is depends on if you use DX12 or Vulcan, and if you play via Steam or native. - For me, a Steam player using DX12, it's the folder called "ShaderCacheD3D12" in "C:\Users\(my name)\AppData\Roaming\Path of Exile 2" Research how to boot to Safe Mode in your Windows environment Boot Windows in Safe Mode Run DDU, uninstall current NVidia drivers Restart Windows in regular mode Install 560.81 drivers Start PoE2 Ignore driver out-of-date warning Your initial game performance will be slow as shader cache is rebuilt but this will go away over time Report back to us! Notes: - I'm not entirely sure if clearing the shader cache is necessary when changing Nvidia driver versions, but it can't hurt. - I've read DDU completely removes a current Nvidia driver, where the "clean install" feature of NVidia's own driver installation does not. Again, it can't hurt. - GGG says newer drivers have the issue but prompts you to update your drivers??? - I count 30+ Nvidia updates and hotfixes since 560.81 and yet none solve this issue??? - No other game has also encountered this issue and successfully worked with NVidia to get it fixed??? All I know: I went back to 560.81 and I've yet to have the black screen / grinding gears / map exploration reset |

The older GPU drivers, as you described, are horrible for in-game performance fps-wise compared to the current ones.
Downgrading your drivers to solve one issue while generating others is NOT a solution. GGG need to pressure NVIDIA. Sitting in HO spamming alts for 4 hours straight is peak PoE gameplay. Thanks, Chris.

" I'm sure the tone and exaggerated language of your note was an expression of your frustration with this issue, and not directed at someone trying to help. I've had performance issues as well with PoE, spending as much time playing as troubleshooting 50% drops in FPS in a single game session - I mention this as my experience with 560.81 has not been "horrible" and "NOT a solution". I acknowledge that there's a wide variety of hardware and configurations out there, so you might have a different experience. But here's the thing: there's no harm in trying it. You may find a small dip in performance while solving the issue - certainly not a bad place to be while we all continue to watch the months tick by waiting on GGG & NVidia. |

" Of course I was not targeting you, but what you said is a bandaid solution to a massive problem that arose with GGG's "updated" engine being partially incompatible with NVIDIA's drivers. And it's not isolated to POE2, as this same issue occurs in POE1. My problem isn't the general performance, as - apart from severe FPS drops when shattering monsters (GGG forgot to implement dynamic culling for shattering monster particle effects) - the game runs more than fine. Well, apart from the constant DX12 crashes, that is. Sitting in HO spamming alts for 4 hours straight is peak PoE gameplay. Thanks, Chris.
