Namelocking: why it sucks more in PoE2 than in PoE1
Note: This post is in response to Talkative Tri's interview with Mr. Rogers, on the topic near the end about an option for turning off namelocking. This is mainly regarding mouse + keyboard movement.
Namelocking is an issue in PoE2 more than in PoE1 for mouse + keyboard because the movement system is fundamentally different. The "cast without moving" option removes namelock, as it did in PoE1. However, we don't use "cast without moving" in PoE2 because we are able to cast/attack WHILE moving. We never had this in PoE1. People are getting namelocked every single mob in PoE2 because they play with this option disabled - and rightly so, as casting while moving is one of the big features of PoE2. "Cast without moving" is not needed in PoE2, but namelock removal is. Therefore, namelocking needs to be SEPARATED from "cast without moving", or just give us the option to not use namelock. If Mr. Rogers does not realize this point, it needs to be acknowledged before the problem can be solved. There is no need to make it more complicated than it is - just give us the option. We don't need to discuss projectile trajectories. How do I know this? I have zero issues targeting in PoE2 when I click halfway on the other side of my screen just in order to prevent namelocking, then mouse over TO THE MOB I am trying to aim at. It makes no sense I have to do this in order to aim properly and move while casting. It seems like he fundamentally doesn't understand the problem at hand. Very interesting.
I will need to do some testing and see what I find. This could explain one of my frustrations. **Asus TUF x670E Gaming, 7950x3d, AIO Corsair H150i Elite, TridentZ 192GB DDR5 6400, Sapphire 7900XTX, All Samsung 4k: 56"<->Arc2 55"<->48", NVME Sabrent Rocket 2TB, MP600 Pro 8tb, MP700 2 TB. I was also a bit frustrated hearing the rant, but glad he's at least looking into it.
My personal examples of skills I would always turn off auto-targeting given the option: Leap slam - While traversing the map with leap slam I'll just have the key/button held while I keep my curser at the edge of the map. If my curser momentarily hovers over a mob at any point my next leap slam won't go to where my curser is, but instead to the mob. Molten strike - This skill becomes incredibly frustrating to use with auto-targeting. You'll clock in the middle of a mob pack, or lead the shot to where you think they'll be, but you'll instead auto target a mob. With the windup time of the skill the mob will typically be close enough that the skill effectively whiffs as the mob is in your face and your AoE skill is now being used as single target. |

i said it an infinite amount of time
for melee to feel good, name locking has to go his comment on the subject during the itw confirmed that jon has no clue what he is talking about he still has designed PoE 2 like a Diablo 2 clone he should have played some fighting games instead, he'd know what it takes to make good combat it's all in the animation and frame data "name locking" = devs that don't know any better but it's like how they did heavy attacks on mobs, it's a red flash LUL GGG has no clue, biggest issue is they think their combat system is god tier... little do they know.. NRFTW fumbled their start, but the core of their combat system is nailed, top notch, they understand, they play fighting games, and they reverse engineered FromSoft engine and how they do their frame data / behavior logic but in PoE 2, a game were you are expected to fight the screen instead of mobs individually, you can't make good combat GGG animator has potential, but hes slacking, and the combat team doesn't know how competition does it better, they don't know how to take full advantage of their animation system jon admitted it, he had to check how other games did the proj targeting he couldn't even acknowledge he was wrong.. anyways, GGG, get rid of all the ancient stats and system, build for what empowers melee combat stop building a game for ranged noobs If I worked at GGG, you'd have the best melee combat of all times แก้ไขล่าสุดโดย ryuukk33#4998 เมื่อ 2 มิ.ย. 2025 03:27:48

Still playing with it.
I had the no move option turned on - to match POE 1 and what I assumed I wanted with stopping movement as soon as I pressed shift. Not knowing of the namelocking. I turned it off earlier and have played my ice sorcerer a bit - it seemed like I was having a bit more trouble getting cold snap to connect. I'll likely turn the option on again tomorrow and play some more. Interested to find out if it seems to apply to my play style (which, of course, doesn't mean it would or would not affect someone else). **Asus TUF x670E Gaming, 7950x3d, AIO Corsair H150i Elite, TridentZ 192GB DDR5 6400, Sapphire 7900XTX, All Samsung 4k: 56"<->Arc2 55"<->48", NVME Sabrent Rocket 2TB, MP600 Pro 8tb, MP700 2 TB. " I believe they were referring to testing "cast without moving" disabled vs enabled, as I talked about in the OP. |
