I'm thinking more along the lines of normal campaign dungeons containing secret treasure rooms.

Exactly. They are already working on finishing up the campaign, just include as part of the design process. As dungeon maps are still being worked on, GGG devs just add a few treasure rooms in their layouts. No additional resources needed.

but tombs of eternals, manor, keth, arrogat, machinarium all have secret rooms with gold and goodies in them...

Yes, those secret rooms are very lackluster and doesn't "wow the player."

I would appreciate the addition of more secret / treasure rooms into the game. Small riddles with hints how to find them or puzzle mechanics to interact with would be fun as well.
