I already admitted that I'm not a fan of PoE1, but PoE2 is really shaping up to be an arpg that rivals D2. I'm hoping GGG is successful in having PoE2 be the best arpg in the genre. Let me be clear, I want GGG to succeed in this endeavor. I don't know why you keep mentioning this.

Nerfing ES would be a major mistake and would cause massive uproar.

You never liked POE 1 yet you want a mechanic introduced in POE 1 (Energy Shield) to be nerfed in a way it would pretty much destroy builds that have natural nodes with it.

Aksing for broad nerfs like these are always a bad idea. 100% of the time.

They were successful in bringing some players back with 0.3 from horrendous 0.2. Nerfing ES would be the nail in the coffin, people would completely lose confidence in the ability of GGG to make clear and intelligent decision. I sure would. I would never forgive them even if they rolled it back after a massive exodus.

This is the kind of nerf only a player that hates path of exile would ask.

I'm trying to have a legitimate discussion about nerfing ES. You're the one being toxic and resorting to personal attacks.

Actively taking armour/es pieces off in favor of straight es pieces now it’s kind of sad


Like a helmet gives me 2.7k ES rather than some phys reduction that won’t be anywhere near that amount of defense WITH armour applied to elemental


ES is just ridiculous my hybrid setup, I reach 10k ES and the thing just doesn’t go below 30-50% standing in abyss holes

And I can just press convalescence if I feel like I’m in trouble

The problem is when there are indiscriminate nerfs to remove the abuse like you see, people that are not abusing it are also punished. Then it becomes mandatory to utilize it in the way that used to be abuse for it to be effective at all.

At the end of the day, the problem with ES is that it has no diminishing returns, while Armour and Evasion do. You can stack Armour and Evasion all day long, and you will not get 100% of either, or even close to it. But if you stack ES all day long, you have so much ES that you are effectively invulnerable.

Both Armour and Evasion work off of an exponentially scaling formula that curtails excessive stacking and prevents such stacking from making you invulnerable. ES has no such formula, and is arguably even worse because the more raw ES you have (from your gear, as an example), the more effective the passive tree bonuses are. But if you have an unnaturally high amount of Armour or Evasion, those multipliers aren't really all that effective due to the formula.

So long as this remains to be the case, ES will never stop being so ridiculous, and any raw reductions to ES serve only to punish those that don't abuse what exists today. The entire defensive layer needs to be rethought entirely.

Agreed, ES is almost always chosen in a hybrid setup. ES is just too good in all situations and doesn't have any downsides... I think that is what people are missing from the discussion.

Or maybe you choose to avoid seeing the downside of ES.


Chaos damage is doubled on ES.

ES cannot be healed with flask like life does unless you spec some atrocious nodes or gear.

Some classes are pure ES. Asking for ES nerf is asking to destroy whole archetypes.
If ES is overrepresented based on data compared to armor and evasion, it should either be nerfed, or armor + evasion buffed.

This is what balancing is about.
